Hello again everyone!

You may remember quite sometime ago i announced that i was going to be releasing a book that would detail the workings of a reductionists mind? Well, the time has finally arrived where this gargantuan tome will be realized! Within this book i have poured out knowledge that will take anyone from complete novice to Deductionist in as much time as it takes for you to put in the work to get you there.

11720753_10207196013287193_27837719_nThere are lessons imparted within here that have yet to be seen anywhere, and have formed part of my daily work as a Deductionist for the past decade. ‘ Have you ever wanted to truly know what goes on inside the head of Sherlock Holmes? Have you wanted to be able to read people and their expressions like books? Have you ever wanted to read a room and all the tells and clues that it provides? Then this is the book for you. The Monographs is a complete and comprehensive manual that will impart the lessons on everything you need to know to become a Deductionist in today’s world. Contained within you will learn how to think and approach problem solving like the famed detective, spot liars in person and through their handwriting, deduce clues, personality traits, and the personal details of people through their phones, watches and clothes. Figure out where people live from the shoes that they wear, deduce what they do for a living, how to build a memory palace as intricate and perfect as the one that is written about, histories, theory, application, how to train, practice and develop your skills. All this and much, much more. After you read this book not only will you see the world but you will truly observe what goes on inside it as well. Your name will still be your own, but you can make it your business to know what other people do not know.’ It is due for release on the 15th of September, you can follow the link to pre-order your copy before they sell out.

Now for those who are keen to get hold of their copy before the release date, that can be done as well. There is currently an indiegogo campaign going with a wealth of goodies for the early bird. Such as T-shirts, signed copies of the book as well as personal tuition and a chance to appear in my very popular web series ‘The Deductionist’. This campaign has been doing incredibly well, just bafflingly well! so be sure to get your orders in before they all go and you have to wait as patiently as we all wait for the next Sherlock special!

I thoroughly appreciate all your support so please spread the word! Ben

Catching up

Good morning, good afternoon, good evening wherever you are!

Well, its been quite sometime since i have written one of these posts and i initially started this with the idea of imparting lessons with each post! however much has happened in my life that i would like to tell you all about!

First of all, i released a couple of products for Mentalists, these detailed powerful material that was particularly close to my heart!.

The first was a dvd called Sherlockian. This can be found at all good magic stores around the world, including and i promised a shout out for tom e lee atmonlymagic.com so check it out! Heres the trailer! SHERLOCKIAN TRAILER I also released a book called ‘Ratiocination’ contained powerful pieces of impromptu work! Ratiocination Such an honor and a pleasure to have my work recognized in this area as something worthwhile and i thank everyone for their kind words and support with all of the products.

I also began work on my very own web series called ‘The Deductionist’. This gave me a real good chance to flex my deductive possible in front of a camera. This was a big learning curve for me! episode 1 is right here THE DEDUCTIONIST EPISODE 1 In the show, everyone has given their time freely, there are no stooges or anyone who has been asked to say and do anything. Everything is exactly as you see it! Episode 2 is coming soon! check out this teaser clip from episode 2! Rock paper scissors on steroids! Episode 2 teaser!

I have sadly had to drop out of work with the book Joe Riggs is planning due to personal reasons but as they say, as one door closes another one will open. Keep your ears and eyes peeled!

And on a final note i have recently included video detailing my plans for the next deduction experiment! this one will be a real challenge! and real fun! thank you to everyone who has offered their time to take part! Now as a feature of this blog i am going to start reviewing book and training items for the modern day deductionist! Any requests will be considered, anything that people would like me to discuss or even interviews you would like me to track down, or try to anyway.

I aim to make this a much more interactive blog!

Hope you are all well!

Emotions, Antagonism and a deductive experiment!

Welcome to the topic of this post! I have begun one of my most difficult challenges in the forms of a deduction experiment! more on that to follow! These blog posts have always been geared more toward lessons and techniques that you can learn and take home with you. Firstly i want to chat about something has re-affirmed my almost 14 year long belief and it is something that i have preached/taught about for many many many years. To begin, i will tell you a little about myself. About 8 years ago (and after living the better part of my life this way i might add) a neuroscientist friend of mine wanted to do some tests on me as part of his course that would form part of his case study and in turn aid in him passing the test. Anyway, as a result of this he diagnosed me when he had passed his course with Ataraxia. Now there is some speculation in certain sectors of science as to whether or not this condition is actually a condition and not just a nihilistic approach to life. It made no difference to me either way as it didn’t change my life one iota. Ataraxia is characterized by a freedom from preoccupation of all sorts and i don’t really understand emotional decision making at all, it really just does not compute with me and as a result i don’t have any empathy. With this in mind, i was able to easily beat polygraphs in the testing and really control all emotional responses. Its not that i am devoid of all pleasantries its just then when i do experience them it is a huge deal for me.

There is a point that i am getting to and it is thus that the emotional qualities are antagonistic to clear reasoning! Recently i had the chance to lecture for a bunch of fellow mentalists on my thoughts and theories regarding my approach to being a mentalist. What is advantageous for a mentalist and in particular, a Deductionist when reading people is to silence the emotional side of your mind as it colors and clouds your reasoning. Emotional bias will make you fall foul of confirmation bias based on your thoughts and inn attentional blindness, as well as not being able to function at your normal analytical self. After all we have all seen the lead protagonist in a film run into incredibly dangerous and stupid situations because something he needs to help his life or the war genius that can not function because he is now smitten with some woman and loses battles because of it. Anyway, i begin my lecture and i perform something that goes well and then i perform something that goes wrong. My brain starts to think ‘oh no, people won’t be enjoying my lecture! come on sort it out and carry on, i am sure they will tell you if you suck!’ As these thoughts were running around my head i was performing my next effect which i performed wrong, creating the wrong impression though i still achieved the correct answer via deduction. This wasn’t enough for me, i started to sweat and then worry. Me, worry??! i don’t do this? then i started to sweat some more and i saw people begin to fold their arms and their cheeks began to slacken and their eyes began to wander. These people are bored i thought, I didn’t really take heed of the obvious that was there in front of me, the heat of 80 people in a warm room with no windows, many had been sat there for 4 plus hours. Many were hungry and tired from the night before. I pulled myself together and finished my lecture with what i am told is a rip roaring success. Though i walked off kicking myself hard! i was gutted that my first lecture with fellow mentalists didn’t go like i hoped it would. Yet person after person kept coming up to me and telling me how much they had enjoyed my lecture and how much they had learnt, asking for my autograph and my picture. I was thinking to myself that these people are insane. Then they were buying my lecture notes and my products and i was still thinking the same. I spoke to 4 amazing people who had been on the circuit for many years who gave me some remarkable advice.

In the end it came down to this when i reflected on what had happened and analyzed the situation as i normally do. The kind of situation where i look at someones shoes and see the salesman or the plumber. The type of situation that sees what people have done that day when i was nowhere in sight, the type of situation that knows someones star sign or pin number or job description. The type of situation that knows whether someone is lying or not. My normal vision that allows me to read people like books. My own emotional qualities were antagonistic to what should have been clear to reason. It was refreshing for me that after so long of not having any really, to experience it again and learn from it. That brief half an hour was torture haha but such a valued experience again! After all it has been close to a decade since anything like that has happened to me.

So this is more of a life-lesson 😉 When you look at the following picture and think to yourself with the emotional side of your brain that imbues your cognitive process with all of the biases and models you have of the world.

Screen Shot 2014-07-22 at 7.30.10 PM

You might be thinking, oh the big biker who is looking mercilessly down on his victim while the people in the background simply stand around and watch. Ignoring the obvious that the expression not merciless, intact it contains no malice whatsoever. There are no expression markers of anything negative at all. Continuing down the road of silencing the emotional side of your brain you will notice that their is a small hand on the mans arm. Small like a child….

In actual fact its his son that he is hugging! Control that side and your deductions will have much stronger and more accurate road to travel down.

Please watch the video.

As the book nears completion i begin to wonder what i will take on next. Sufficed to say though that both myself and Joe Riggs are elated at the prospect of what you are all going to learn and be able to do, thanks to this epic monograph. We are very proud of it incase that hadnt come across! Until then please enjoy the following video.

Or the following….

Take care friends! Have a good one!

Hello all!

In this edition of the blog the topic that is up for discussion is job titles. At all times in my blog i am calling on actual real life experience of going out and doing this. This seems to be a very popular request for the modern Deductionist and Mentalist, so what follows is a small offering to wet your whistle on how i go about performing this type of effect. As lord knows the ‘course material’ so to speak is quite vast!

So lets look at this as objectively as possible. The most chance i have to practice and indeed demonstrate this is when i am out performing. In these kinds of situations and venues its a fact that your canvases, so to speak will have scrubbed themselves of a lot of the clues that can be read to glean possible job titles. For the simple fact that people dress up to go out. At a party you will rarely find anyone there that has just come from their place of work and even if they have then they have gotten changed in a rush to be there. You will not find anyone in their work uniforms…apart from the people that actually work at the venue.

To quote an example, at a recent party i was working and performing at one time for a group of men. One of which was at least 6” 3′ wearing a short sleeved shirt, clearly defined Tricep and Forearm muscles and a rough scratch on the left tricep. He had a slight beer induced gut and even his smart shoes were rough boots.

So what conclusions did i/can you draw from this? it is again about taking a step back and looking at what was presented and i was quite fortunate in this instance that what was presented was quite a lot. This is how i broke it down :

BODY TYPE – A person’s body is often a visual metaphor for their life, in this case what was shown to me is someone that is physically active but has no real footstep into the healthy lifestyle. That much was clear from the rotund swelling of the midsection. Now as it was that the triceps and the forearms were developed and not the biceps that points to gripping and pushing, it would have to be repeated over a long period of time to define muscular structure in someone that really didnt care too much about keeping fit. Which is why i thought that would be involved in his job.

His shoes i asked about with a mere offhand compliment and he chose to fill in the blanks for me.

ME : Hey, i like your boots. they look durable.

THE MAN : Yeah man, ive got a few

So if he has a lot of those kinds of shoes, its a fair assumption he might use a pair like that for work, couple that with the scratch and the body type it seemed to me to be only one place he could work and that would be in a warehouse. Which he was. Pushing big trolley loads of equipment around, the shoes would provide the necessary protection, the scratch turned out to be a regular hazard of the job though i didnt actually focus on it. i just asked after i had made my guess.

In this instance you can see how taking a step back and seeing what is possible to observe from the person, then you can follow your deductions through to their natural conclusion. you will not always be presented with something that can lead to job titles. Even at events when the clues have been scrubbed, this is still a possibility.

A great man once intimated at the theory, Observe, Analyze, Deduce. That is to say you can make your observations:

  • Beer belly vs definition in forearms and triceps
  • Shoes
  • Scratch on arm

Analyze what is this means:

  • Lazy lifestyle choice, or at least a lax attitude towards health.
  • Muscle definition would take time in someone with this attitude towards health, so it would be something that he did often and for quite some time. Job?
  • If he has a lot of these kinds of shoes, would he have a similar pair for work?
  • Scratch, possible work hazard? Not really confident enough to pursue.

Then make your deductions:

  • Arms would mean pushing, gripping. No real bicep action would make warehouse more likely as opposed to working in the builders yard. That would be more all over work.
  • This fits with the shoes idea, shoes built for protection. A lot of heavy duty items going on in a warehouse.

It is in my opinion quite difficult to explain this kind of thought process as it is only with practice and honing of the skill that it starts to feel natural to you. So when out performing, or if this is merely a passion of yours then it seems obvious to say that you can only make your deductions based on the knowledge and the hard drive of information you have in your head on this subject matter. The world we live in is a world of google and simply knowing how to find information. This is fine for knowledge and research to store for later use. however as we are particularly concerned in this instance with actually doing this, then knowing how to find information from online or books will do you little good.

Lateral thinking of this nature will take time develop but is considerably fun to practice. So let me pose you a ‘game’ precisely as it was given to me. The answers and deductions i made will feature at the end of the blog, so be good and test yourself first.

You will notice there is a picture key ring attached to the bag, on one side there is this:

And on the other side there is handwritten, this ‘ A U  GUYS!!! ‘

Now i made some deductions about the bag and its owner but the question that was posed to me is ,” You now have all the information you need to open the lock. What is the code?”

Which seems a ridiculous question, however the information is there i promise you. So what does this boil down to then in executing something of this nature, semantically speaking. It is my opinion that it comes down to whatever information you have stored away in the ‘Attic’ in your mind that you can draw on. The more you immerse yourself in this kind of knowledge, that you need to perform this task then the better off you will be. Eventually you will know the difference between the shoes of a plumber and a salesman. The wear and tear on Jewelry of someone that works behind at till. The wear on clothes of someone that sits down a lot at their job.

(To wet your whistle of interest, plumbers need strength and manoeuvrability, work underneath sinks an with toilets and are mobile so their shoes will take them from inside to outside and back again. Salesmen are the wheelers dealers of the world of buying and selling. Office based salesmen and women will have shoes that are expensive, clean and more often than not pointy in the toe area with a crease from where they have had their feet bent under their chair as they are sat behind their desk all day. Door to door salesmen will go for a similar approach but the shoes will be obviously cleaned.

Till dwelling workers stand behind their till in, invariably the same posture of hands rested on the table top in which the till resides. With a lot finger tapping to pass the boredom. Bracelets will leave indentations around the wrist, the circular nature of rings will flatten out slightly on one end where they have been drummed against over time and rested against the counter.

People who get to sit down a lot at their jobs will have visible crease marks in their shirts/blazers etc that start at the bottom of the back and end mid shoulder blades.  This is due to moving around in their chairs and leaning over their desk to complete whatever task they have in hand.)

There is no getting away from the fact that this is a huge mental undertaking, which is probably why it seems so popular. This is a demonstration of a unique skill as with most feats of mentalism so if we keep looking for shortcuts, when the reality is possible then we never experience a chance to grow, in mind and performance and in infamy 😉

Here is a further tip to get you started. Ask the person in question if they enjoy their job and then what kind of hobbies they have. If they enjoy their job then the hobbies will reflect an aspect of their job, and if they don’t enjoy their job then their hobbies will be of an opposition to their job title.

I sincerely hope that this has got your mental juices flowing enough to set to work on your palace and go out and make your deductions.

Now to tell you all about a regular performance going on, in lichfield. A performance of mystery men called The mysterians. This Halloween there is a performance going on containing the highest standard of UK mystery performers! For more information and tickets, go here now! Ill see you there!

As always guys find me on all the usual social media stuff (Facebook, twitter, Skype)

I love to and will do talk about this and all things at great length.

Take it easy!

Lateral thinking game :

  • A diary is visible so there is a need for organization, particularly a diary for next year. so whatever this person is involved in it will continue into next year.
  • From the style of the bag you can make a guess about the age range of the owner, late teens to late 20’s
  • This would suggest a student of some description. (It was)
  • The discrepancy in the pics on the keyring of ‘Hey you guys’ vs ‘A U Guys’ suggests something about the humour of this person which is why i went for student and not young teacher. As the ‘Hey you guys’ is a literal quote from the film, the play on words makes the ‘A U’ stand out.
  • AU on the periodic table is gold, whose atomic number is 79. As a four digit number this 0079 which was the padlock combination. Also suggest something about the topic of this persons study!

Walk this way, what does that say?

I, like most Sherlock Holmes geeks watched the much anticipated ‘Elementary’ now I am not going to get into a rant over the show (which believe me would take some time). There was an interesting scene in one of the episodes in which Sherlock correctly deduces details about Watson’s amorous activity based upon her walking gait.

Sat watching with my girlfriend she asked me if this was possible, I honestly had no answer whatsoever for her. Well I couldn’t provide an answer that would be based solely on the walk of someone no. So this is what led me down 4 and a half months of research and experiments. Test’s were carried out on friends, family and even complete strangers to place as many different variables into the research as possible. Many questions obviously arise here from anyone and what follows I hope will answer as many as possible.

Initially from any kind of deduction or observation as personal as this one, the first way to go about it would to make your guess based on the analysis of the person in questions’ bass line behaviour. To very briefly explain what this is, this is what their behaviour is like in a normal everyday situation. Behaviour that differs from this normal baseline status is often considered emotional stress peeks, however if you add context to the situation the this provides a different viewpoint on the situation. For example, a friend who is busy with work commitments and is known to be single will often behave in a very specific way. Changes to this behaviour will be noticeable to those initiated with their baseline. Changes most often akin to amorous activity are to do with emotions and moods.

It is true that it is often considered a way to de-stress yourself and bring your mood back to a more amiable one. All emotional reasons, and chosen partner for the activity aside the mood change is largely due to the endorphin release. These endorphins are released into the spinal fluid and other parts of the body which is essentially the hub for obvious posture, this has a domino effect in that a change in physiology will affect the mood/emotion you are feeling at the time. Very basically put, science has proven that if you are feeling low and you smile then you will begin to feel happier.
This is due to the chemical make up of endorphins which are similar to morphine and other analgesics.

However, these endorphins can and often are released during other forms and strenuous exercise and attendance at the gym. They can even be released during something as simple as a fit of hysterical laughter!

During my efforts and research, I found out all to quickly that this type of information could not be gleaned from merely walk alone. That would depict a mood change definitely, but to gauge ones amorous activity then other attributes will need to be taken into account.
-Do you know the person, to develop a baseline for their normal everyday gait.
-Can you deduce that they are actively involved in sports or health. There are many key markers in making a deduction of this nature but I have a tendency to go off on a tangent so as this blog is primarily concerned with walking, I shall stick to that topic.
-Do they have a partner with them? What does their body language reveal about the state of sir relationship? A mix of statistical analysis will help in a more direct guess.

So, in conclusion my findings are that no, you cannot gauge someone’s sexual activity by there walking pace/gait alone.

This is a PDF work up of the correlation between walking pace and age, and gender/smoking/alcohol etc. There is some interesting points about the psychophysiological reactions when emotions are felt as well and how this affects are walk.

The classic ‘wobbly bottom’ of the models way of walking, causes excess pressure on the Gluteus Medius which can lead to back pain and weak muscles. Pilates will help with this, so if you ever find yourself performing for models then it is a safe bet that at least one of them will have taken a Pilates class.

Boston medical research centre found a correlation between a slow walking pace and the amount of electrical activity in the brain. This basically means that fewer neutrinos are firing and it will function at a slower pace. This can lead to a risk of dementia, poor performance on language’ memory and decision making. Speed walking relates to exercise and endorphin release. The heads of the National Institute on Agings Behavioural and Systems Neuroscience Branch have stated that walking change is an observable change in cognitive processing. A slow deterioration is the biggest indicator towards dementia and Alzheimer’s sufferers. A note on this information would be that they consider a slow pace of walking to be 2ft per second and a fast pace to be 3.3 ft per second.

Limping, which is indicative of the pelvis having dropped on one side, most likely cause of this would be an osteoarthritic hip. This can be seen in shoes with an excessive wear on the heel of one shoe more than the other an for the detective, a consistently deeper footprint on one side. I will write a separate entry in a few months on shoes and possible inferences so for now I will keep them very brief. If the limp means they are tiptoeing on one side, this relates to medicinal problem with the heel and ankle of the foot and can be seen in excessive crease marks on one shoe more than the other. Which is situated below the laces.

There are many other aspects I could cite but would require further medical explanation and I fear another tangent coming on so I will endeavour to be as to the point as possible.

– A stomping which is consistent in the walk may suggest a vitamin b12 deficiency. One of the functions of this vitamin is to help regulate the brain signals that give information about the position of the limb in relationship to the ground. This is called proprioception.

– Any issues with walking up stairs, the most likely cause of this is bunions.

– A shuffling to the walk. Much like the pace this would need to be progressive but however would indicate Parkinson’s onset. This is a progressive neurological disorder, which cause a deficiency of the brain chemical dopamine. Depleted Dopamine levels can leads to a loss of muscle control.

There you have it friends, I have thrown a lot of information at you in a very short space of time and for this I apologise. However it is all valid and worthwhile to learn for the deductionist. File it away neatly in your memory palace 🙂
